GC.CA DNS FAQ

This document describes the Government of Canada (GoC) Domain Name System (DNS) subdomain application form. To apply for a GC.CA subdomain, please complete the application form and submit online using the "Submit" button. If you prefer not to submit online please contact the GoC Registrar to obtain a text file for submission. Your application can be emailed to registry@gc.ca or faxed to (613) 991-2052.

Please note that your application is being made on behalf of your entire organization and as such it is important that you are authorized to speak for the entire organization in this matter.

The GoC Registrar is the final authority on all matters relating to registration and subsequent use of your GC.CA subdomain name. Your subdomain must be approved by the GoC Registrar before it is used in network communications or publications.

Description of fields

Subdomain:

Submit the name of the subdomain applied for. Since the GoC domain is structured according to federal government organizational divisions, the name will be structured as: "yourorg.GC.CA".

In order to qualify as a GC.CA subdomain, your organization and/or program must be recognized as a federal government department, agency, tribunal, commission or a government initiative. Crown corporations are also accepted for registration under GC.CA.

Once a subdomain name has been allocated, your organization is responsible for any hostnames or subdomains to the left of the allocated gc.ca subdomain without any authorization from the GoC Registrar. If the allocated name is yourorg.gc.ca, you can assign any division to the left such as hostname.yourorg.gc.ca or subdomain.yourorg.gc.ca.

The subdomain "yourorg" is a string that encodes the proper name of your organization. Determining the string is a matter of establishing the "corporate electronic identity" of your organization for years to come. It is preferable to chose a string that most readily identifies you in the mind of other government organizations, companies and segment(s) of the public with which your organization most often deals. In addition to the "significance" of the string, another consideration is the length of the string. The electronic name of your organization may need to be printed on business cards, and may need to be typed for each instance of communication initiated by some users in other organizations.

It is your responsibility to ensure that you have the right to use the name you have chosen. The GoC Registrar will not issue a subdomain name to your organization that is in conflict with an officially recognized title (including the acronym) of another federal government organization.

The following additional general rules apply:

Acceptable Characters: No characters other than a combination of the following characters may be included in a subdomain registration.

  1. Letters a through z (no accents of any kind will be accepted). Note that domain names are not case sensitive. This means there will be no distinction made between upper and lower case letters.
  2. The numbers 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9.
  3. The hyphen character (although it cannot be used to start or end a subdomain name).
Length: Subdomains must not be less than two(2) and not more than fifty(50) characters long.

Description:

If your subdomain is an acronym, please spell out the name in full under this field.

Organization:

The full name of your organization.

Type:

Type of organization as shown below:

Agency, Commission, Committee, Council, Crown Corp., Events, Mission, Multi-departmental, Organizational, Partnership, Task Force, Tribunal, Vanity

Mandate:

A short paragraph describing the mandate / purpose of your organization or program. For organizations other than federal government departments, this paragraph should also describe the department with which your organization is affiliated,and an indication of why your organization is considered independent of the department for the purposes of the allocation of GC.CA subdomains.,

AdminName:

Indicate the name, title, full mailing address, phone number, facsimile number, and electronic address of the administrative contact for the organization. This person is within the subdomain's organization and is the contact point for administrative and policy questions about the subdomain. This person is responsible for this application and for any future changes. This person should occupy a position of considerable responsibility within your organization, and should typically be the person responsible for all telecommunications and informatics matters within your organization. Note that this information must be kept current and that any changes should be submitted to the GoC Registrar.

TechName:

Indicate the names, titles, full mailing addresses, telephone numbers,facsimile numbers, and electronic addresses of two technical contacts. These individuals are the contact points for problems with the subdomain and for updating information about the subdomain. The registrar will verify changes by sending the current registration information back to the submitter and to the administrative contact. We recommend that you use a properly maintained generic electronic address. Note that this information must be kept current and that any changes should be submitted to the GC Registrar.

The Admin can can be used as one of the Tech names for very small organizations.

NetProvider:

Indicate the name of your primary network provider. Your network provider is the organization which provides, or will provide, your IP connectivity to the Internet (i.e. GENet/GTIS, Magma, IGS, etc...).

If you have no connectivity but wish to reserve a subdomain name, specify "none" as your provider. No further information would be required at this time but the application must be updated when connectivity is needed.

If you currently have connectivity, the balance of the application must be completed showing your nameserver.

Nameserver Information:

The hostname and IP address of your Primary and Secondary nameservers must be provied for pointers to be set in the GC.CA DNS server for passing delegation of authority.

For example:
Primary(Hostname): onet.on.ca
(IP Address): 128.100.102.112

Secondary(Hostname): relay.srv.gc.ca
(IP Address): 192.197.83.1

Additional secondary nameserver info is optional based on the client's set-up. One Primary and one Secondary must be completed if delegation is required.


N.B. The GoC Registrar does not monitor the subdomains chosen to ensure conformity against guidelines/standards set out by the Treausury Board or those of Official Languages. It is the responsiblity of the applying department to ensure that all standards are met when choosing their subdomains.
